1) First Saturday Jam - Barberville,
October 4th - 9am - 5pm -
WE NEED A COUPLE MORE WORKSHOPS!!! - PLEASE LET US KNOW ASAP - USUALLY THE "TEACHER" LEARNS MORE THAN THE STUDENTS AND "TEACHING" A WORKSHOP IS A SUPER WAY TO HONE YOUR OWN SKILLS - LET US KNOW QUICKLY SO WE CAN PUT ON THE SCHEDULE - THANKS!!!
The numbers at the last event doubled from the first event - let's keep spreading the word!!!!! - this facility is an absolute gem and the Settlement folks are SOOOOO receptive to more music, workshops, etc. not just at the First Saturday events but throughout the year - if you haven't been, CHECK IT OUT and bring a car full of friends
The incomparable "Possum Pickers" will be the dance band this time with Alice Milmoe calling - bring your dancin' shoes!!!!!!!!!!
Workshops: Right now we have the following:
Clawhammer Banjo - has been a constant favorite
Stretching for Musicians - (this we think is a much-needed workshop to learn some good stretching exercises
to help prevent "problems" or to help correct some problems you may be having in certain hand positions, etc. -
Percussion - primarily bodhran and maybe work on incorporating some triplets in rhythm patterns, etc. -
flexible, so can "mess" around and maybe play to some nifty tunes just depending on who shows up
Beginning Guitar
Beginning Mandolin
We'd like some more workshop presenters for this event - how about a harp workshop???? If you'd like to do one, let us know - or if you know someone who would be a good teacher ask them and then let us know - any autoharp, dulcimer, resonator/slide guitar folks out there???? - anyone want to host a Celtic session, etc. ???
#2) Lake County Folk Festival - October 11/12 - Eustis - this is the 11th year for the festival which to us is one of the best around as it's supported by downtown merchants and the city with various venues scattered around the downtown area - you can duck into a coffee shop or restaurant for a bite or to chat with friends and then go catch some more music - one of the best festivals around - it's free and you can't help but feel welcome - here's the link:
http://www.lakecountyfolkfest.
com/
REMEMBER - THERE IS NO CHARGE FOR THIS FESTIVAL AND YOU CAN MILL AROUND DOWNTOWN, DUCK INTO A STORE FOR BROWSING OR A SNACK, ETC. - ONE OF THE BEST!!!
#3) Palatka Bluegrass Festival - October 9-10-11 - 1st Annual FallPalatka Bluegrass Festival Rodeheaver Boys' Ranch - Highway 19, Palatka, Florida - unfortunately this is the same weekend as the Lake County festival and also as the Creekside Festival in Flagler County - you'd think folks would check calendars before scheduling so folks can go to EVERYTHING!!! rather than having to split up the pool of potential attendees - anyway,

#4) THE SUNSHINE STATE ACOUSTIC MUSIC CAMP - November 14-15-16 - is a Florida institution, an annual teaching/learning camp held at Boyd Hill Environmental Studies Area in St. Petersburg. The camp will be on NOVEMBER 14-15-16 this year. NOW is the time to register. The SSAMC is kept small compared to other larger camps, because we want everyone to have a chance to have a maximum of good experiences in small classes and with plenty of one-on-one time with instructors outside of the class times. The camp provides an opportunity for students of all ages and levels of skill to spend an entire weekend with highly qualified teachers of acoustic music.
The teachers at SSAMC are not “celebrities”, but real experts, focused on acoustic music and interested in passing it on to you. The Sunshine State camp offers a wide array of classes (over 100 sessions in the weekend) in just about every subject imaginable pertaining to making acoustic music. There are student shows, a big instructor concert on Saturday night, mentored jamming around the fire circle at all times. Picnic areas, lots of room for kids to play, free camping, free RV parking, and bunks in bunkhouses are available--all in a beautiful natural setting. Tuition prices are reasonable and some scholarships are available.
Full information, pictures, and registration forms, are available on the internet through camp director Charley Groth's web site at http://www.cgmusicman.com . On the introductory page, click on the lower of two buttons to access the music camp section of the web site. If you have any questions or need any information not provided on the web site, please feel free to e-mail camp director Charley Groth at charleygroth@yahoo.com
The Sunshine State Music Camp operates as economically as possible, so we can keep the registration price low and offer the camp to as many people as possible. That means we don't have the kind of advertising and promotion budgets many of the larger, more "for-profit" camps have. Of course it is vitally important to get the word out! Every year people come to us **after** the camp and tell us they'd have been there if they'd only known about it in time. You can help us get the word out by forwarding this e-mail to your e-mail list and/or to anyone you think might be interested in coming to the camp or helping to let others know about the camp.
Thanks very much... Hope to see you at this year's Sunshine State Acoustic Music Camp. It looks like it will be one of the best ever. We'll learn a lot, teach a lot, share a lot, and have a MAJOR amount of fun!!
Charley Groth
SSAMC Director
