Central Florida Dulcimer and Autoharp Festival -
Feb 13/14, 2009 - Mount Dora
www.fldulcimer.com or email Ruth at: dulcirah@embarqmail.com
Pat and I got to spend last weekend (and our anniversary) out in the
wilds of Melrose with some great friends and musicians - I was put to the
test on a couple of super fast jigs by not one but two different fiddlers
in a couple of different jams - Florida has to have the best talent of
anywhere and the love of the music sure shines through when folks just
play for fun - Thanks Chuck and Karan!
1) December 28th (Sunday) - Ormond
Beach - Jack Williams Annual Holiday/Birthday Concert and Pot Luck
- this annual event is always very well
attended and one the highlights of the year so early reservations are
HIGHLY suggested - this year we'll be having a
" Pot Luck" starting around 5:30 pm
- Music starts about 7:30 - come for either or both!! - so
bring something scrumptious to share - healthy/unhealthy matters not!! -
knock yourself out - we'll have sodas, coffee, tea, and such so just
bring some foodstuffs -
$12.50
From 1958 through 1987, Jack was probably best-known as an
electric guitarist in several influential rock bands. In the late 60's,
he began exploring his troubadour nature and started to perform solo,
singing and playing a gut-string guitar, traveling coast to coast. Before
becoming a writer, Jack drew inspiration from the varied likes of Jesse
Winchester, Josh White, Hank Williams, Willis Alan Ramsey and Ray
Charles. When the spirit moves him today, hundreds of songs from favorite
writers spring readily from his lips and fingers.
As a hired-gun guitarist in the 60's, Jack worked shows with John Lee
Hooker, Big Joe Turner, Jerry Butler, Z.Z. Hill and Hank Ballard. His
bands also backed up such artists as the Shirelles, the Del-Vikings, the
Coasters, the Drifters, and the Platters.
"...one of the strongest guitar players in contemporary
folk."
- Sing Out!
"Jack is the best guitar-player I've ever heard."

2) Barberville First Saturday Jam Day
- January 3, 2009 - gates open 9am - workshops
start at 10am - this is going to be a great 2009 Kick-Off Jam day at the
Settlement!!! Hopefully there'll be a LOT of folks there with some
new instruments!!
We can normally bring a couple of extra instruments to lend out during
the workshops (for the day only, will need them back at end of workshop)
but need to know in advance as can only carry so much in the car - we can
normally bring an extra mandolin or two, a few fiddles, banjo, acoustic
bass guitar and/or bodhrans. First come/first served as can only
bring a few so if
you or your significant other/kids may want to try
something, let me know in advance as won't bring anything extra unless
reserved in advance.
Would like to have a couple more workshops
for this one, so if you're interested please let us know
asap so we can get info out to folks and the Settlement, etc. - here's
what we have so far - more will hopefully be added so check next week's
email. We may also need a dance caller so
if you're interested please let us know asap

We'll have a contra dance (if there are some
dancers) or if not enough dancers then we'll have a Contra dance jam
hosted by Al Poindexter and friends from Jax
On the "percussion rudiments" this does NOT mean
"percussion basics" (but guess it really does) - if there's
interest, thought we'd go over some (just a few) of the BASIC percussion
"Rudiments" (there are 40 total) which are VERY applicable to
any type of hand percussion and NOT just for conventional kit drummers,
etc. - helps to get both hands "equal" and to work on
muscle memory, etc. which is esp. needed for the "weak" hand -
so we'll just go over maybe 4-5 rudiments, maybe a diddle, etc. - and of
course we can always do a little bodhran, etc. if any interest in
same.

7) Eustis - Feb 14th (Sat) - this in
from Jay & Valinda (Starbird) -
Olivia's
Coffeehouse Eustis, Fl
Loyd Baldwin Fiddle and Banjo Workshop-Feb.
14
This is an initial announcement that Loyd Baldwin will be coming to teach
a day-long old time fiddle and banjo workshop on Feb. 14th. Classes
will be morning and afternoon---the price will be $20.00 for the day no
matter what you come to-and we will request a commitment to at least one
meal at Olivia's while doing the workshop. Specs on the classes
will be out next week---there will be a grand finale jam from 7-10:00 of
old time music that evening. Other instruments are welcome to buy
into the workshop and hang out and learn the tunes.....guitar, mandolin,
bass, etc.
We didn't want to collide with the Trinity Coffeehouse but this is the
date that seems to work for both Olivia and Lloyd. We will be
sending registration and release forms to: Pete Easton, Katie Bailey, and
Marvin Rivett as we need to achieve from 20-30 attendees to make it worth
it for everyone. Loyd is a fine tunes teacher and Valinda and I
consistently play tunes learned at his workshops in the past. We are
requesting that attendees have had some experience playing stringed
insturments, can tune their instrument, and come to the workshops to have
fun but also be focused.
A day-long workshop would ordinarily cost FAR MORE than this----------and
it is a real treat to have Loyd offer his talents. Will
streamline this information after the holidays.
Loyd Baldwin has been a noted old-time Florida fiddler for many
years----has a pack of unusual tunes under his belt and well-known on the
contra circuit.
Cape Breton - - thanks to
all who have already sent us some links, info, and your
experiences/places to go up there - Pat and I are kicking around the idea
of going up to Cape Breton for a week or so sometime next year, maybe
during the summer or ??? - had wanted to go to the Stan Rogers festival
but that conflicts with Common Ground dates so we'll have to work around
that - and as usual, we're looking for "sessions" and such,
preferably "indigenous" and not the typical tourist fare so
we're starting to see who of our acquaintances may know some
folks/locations for sessions up there???? Know of any?? - we'll likely
try to go during some non-peak tourist times so any ideas much
appreciated. - may fly into Halifax or into Maine and then drive up, not
sure yet. So, also of course have been tracking down lots of Cape
Breton fiddle tunes and such so if you happen to have a good link for
some of those, send it on!
You have a passport - but does
your pet?? - a friend of ours,
Bill Cummins, has started offering a "Pet Passport" package
(only $12.95) - it got a great write-up in the local paper and if you
ever need to take your pets to a kennel for a "vacation" you
know how you have to have all the "stuff" with you -
vaccination info, rabies info, kennel shot info, etc, etc - we have 3
dogs (and a kitty) and several times we've arrived at the kennel only to
find we forgot something at home - not to mention travelling
internationally or up to Canada, etc. - check this out - pretty
inexpensive (only $12.95) and makes a great "stocking stuffer"
for pet owners - everything's in one place and thus helps even when just
going to the vet - find out more on Bill's site at
http://caipublishing.net/
universalpetpassport.html
Pet Portraits by
Pat - OK, couldn't
resist the play on words - someone commissioned Pat to do a portrait (in
pastels) for Christmas of their pet dog (lab I think) - she came over to
check the "progress" and Pat had two underway (in case one
didn't turn out too well) so the lady/client says "I want them
BOTH" - so Pat's (and I) are happy campers - better get her while
she's still "affordable" - gal came by last night and picked
them up as a Christmas present for her husband and was thrilled with
them.
Bye for now - back next week - maybe - or might be off camping/playing
some music - we'll see!
Upcoming concerts:(

January 24 (Saturday), 2009 - -
Barb
Ryman - Barb's coming back
for another concert - most everybody just seems to love her music and her
gentle way of weaving a tale but she can also rile things up -
don't miss this kick-off for 2008 Crystal-voiced Minneapolis singer/songwriter Barb Ryman sounds lovely and
earnest on "Earthbound," her fifth album in a late-blooming career that started after her kids
were grown. She sings about soft green moss,
sunset and even strawberry pie. And she ends with "Spam Me," a
commentary about e-mails with a clever chorus set to the tune of Roger Miller's "Dang Me." It's a low-tech LOL
classic.
"Just when you think Ryman is all about beautiful spiritual tunes
like “Song for the Mother’s Gospel,” she sings about junk mail – “Spam me, spam me/Might as well take a truck and wham
me.” She’s a grounded mystic with folky
songs in pleasant arrangements of acoustic guitar, steel drums, fiddle
and mandolin played by Peter Ostroushko and more." - JA - Sing Out! • Autumn 2007 • Vol. 51 #3
Ryman has toured throughout the U.S. performing in concert series, folk
festivals, coffeehouses, house concerts, and radio shows. She has shared the stage with Cheryl Wheeler, Robin
& Linda Williams, and Les Sampou, to name a few. Her songs have aired on folk programs across the nation, in Europe
and Australia.
Now with five CDs, her latest, Earthbound, features guest musicians of
Prairie Home Companion fame, Peter Ostroushko, Adam Granger, and
Prudence Johnson. Since her start, Ryman has received nine nominations
for Minnesota Music Awards including Songwriter Of The Year, Recording Of
The Year, Song Of The Year, and Female Vocalist. In 2002, the
American Composers Forum awarded her the coveted McKnight Composer
Fellowship. Also known for her topical humor, ABC television bought
rights to her satirical song "All American Dysfunctional
Family" to promote a 2006 sit-com pilot. In 2007, she was a New Song
Winner at the Winfield Folk Festival, a major U.S. festival.

Roy Book Binder - - Ormond
Beach, Fl 7:00 p.m. - $15 - ROY BOOK BINDER, is a Blues
Singing, guitar picking, song writing raconteur, and has been for the
past 40 years! Roy has been interviewed by Terry Gross on NPR's Fresh
Air, featured on the Emmy award winning segment of the PBS TV series EGG
Art in America, and appeared more than 30 times on Ralph Emory's highly
regarded TV series Nashville Now.
Book Binder has been included in THE BIG BOOK OF BLUES, as well as THE
BLUES WHO'S WHO!! Roy has been continually touring across America in his
tour bus, which has been his home for the last thirty years, as well as
performing internationally.
Back in the early 1960s, Roy learned his craft from the legendary blind
street singer, Reverend Gary Davis, who was thrust into the national
spotlight when Peter, Paul, and Mary recorded his song "If I Had My
Way." After two years of traveling the folk-blues circuit with his
mentor, Roy struck out on his own. Along the way, he befriended Pink
Anderson, an old Carolina medicine show performer (who by the way was the
"Pink" in Pink Floyd. Pink's stories and songs will forever be
kept alive as long as Roy has a stage to perform on...
In his travels, Book Binder has run across quite a cast of characters,
including three peg-legged dancers, and a 90 year old classic blues
singer with a sparkling smile, who was known as, "Diamond
Teeth" Mary (Bessie Smith's half sister). All of these characters
have become a part of a "Roy Book Binder show" which is a
hilarious educational experience not to be missed!
Roy has toured with Bonnie Raitt, Hot Tuna, and J.J. Cale. He has been
invited to many festivals including: The National StoryTelling Festival,
the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, the Chicago Blues Festival,
and MerleFest where he has hosted the acoustic blues stage for the past
14 years.
March 29 (Sunday), 2009
- - David
Mallett - Ormond Beach, FL - 7:00 pm
Those of you who were here for David last year remember what an awesome
concert it was - well, he's back......!!
The songs Mallett writes and sings are filled with passion, evocative
imagery, and a sense of the inevitable passage of time. The loss of American towns and rural
landscapes is the subject of many of his songs, as are the issues of wilderness preservation and the struggle of the
common man. When he is not touring, the place where he makes his songs is in his writing room in an old farmhouse with
a view across the field and a tintype of his great-great grandfather on the wall.
“I like to keep reaching out to touch the past,” he says, “to connect it
with what’s going on now. To me music is
one of the few things that is timeless ... human emotion is one continual
chain.”
In the millenium edition of The Bangor Daily News, in his home state, he
was named along with Marshall Dodge,
Andrew Wyeth, E.B. White, Stephen King, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and
others, one of the most memorable "Mainers" of the
twentieth century.
"Midnight on the Water" is Mallett's most recent work.
The album was recorded live at a series of shows along the maine coast in the summer of 2005, and it features 17 of the most
memorable songs from his 30-year career. It features "the Mallett band", a trio usually only heard in
Maine-Mallett on vocals, guitar and harmonica, Mike urd on bass, and Susan Crippen on violin and viola. A subtle
blending of bass, violin and viola creates an understated compliment to the mature voice of one of America's most
unique and consistent singer songwriters.
Mallett's most recent honor comes from the readers of FOLKWAX who
voted him 2003 Artist of the Year, and his 2003 album "Artist in Me" 2003 Album of the Year.
