Frank Thomas, Stetson Kennedy and more.....

The Arts Council of Greater Palatka would like to announce our next  "Live at The Larimer"

On July 27 at the historic Larimer Art Center 216 Reid St. Palatka.  Doors open at 6:30 show starts at 7:00

Performing will be singer song writer  Frank Thomas known as the father of folk in Florida.  Mr. Thomas has also invited a very  special guest  writer/ civil rights activist Stetson Kennedy.  Frank told me he would be inviting Stetson on stage to recognize him and do a small interview for the audience.  Mr. Thomas will then perform a song he wrote for Stetson some time ago.  This is a great opportunity to meet two very legendary men.  Please read the bottom of this page for more on Mr. Kennedy.

Frank Thomas
Born and raised in Clay county, Frank Thomas is a native Floridian whose ancestors came to Florida in the late eighteenth century. His families direct connection with the land, his strong Florida heritage, and his love of Florida inspired much of his music. Frank’s entire family played music and he learned it singing gospel at home and in church. Frank went on to tour nationally as front man with The Arkansas Travelers playing rhythm guitar. He later returned to Florida and performed extensively with his wife, Ann (1946-2004).

Frank has written over five hundred songs about Florida. He has recorded nine albums including Cracker Nights , Florida Stories, Bingo!, Spanish Gold, and Just Another Day… . Together, Frank and Ann produced and hosted a weekly singer-songwriter radio show for WMNF-FM in the Tampa area. They traveled Florida performing their music at schools, festivals, music and folk clubs, on television, and on concert stages. Their video ”Florida History in Song” won the Florida Historical Societies coveted Golden Quill Award. Other awards received include The Florida Folk Heritage Award, and  The Inaugural Jillian Prescott History Award. Though Ann passed in 2004, Frank continues the rich tradition of passing on Florida history through story telling in song

Stetson Kennedy, one of the pioneer folklore collectors during the first half of the twentieth century, was born in Jacksonville, Florida in 1916. As a teenager he began collecting Cracker and African-American folksay material while he was collecting "dollar down and dollar a week" accounts for his father, a furniture merchant. He left the University of Florida in 1937 to join the WPA Florida Writers' Project, and was soon, at the age of 21, put in charge of folklore, oral history, and ethnic studies.

Kennedy's first book, Palmetto Country, appeared in 1942 as a volume in the American Folkways Series edited by Erskine Caldwell. Of it, folklorist Alan Lomax has said, "I very much doubt that a better book about Florida folklife will ever be written." To which Kennedy's self-described "stud buddy" Woody Guthrie added, "gives me a better trip and taste and look and feel for Florida than I got in the forty-seven states I've actually been in body and tramped in boot."

In the aftermath of WWII Kennedy infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan and other racist/terrorist groups, and he subsequently authored a number of books dealing with human rights, including The Klan Unmasked, Southern Exposure, Jim Crow Guide, and After Appomattox: How the South Won the War, some of which have been widely translated into foreign languages.

A founding member and past president of the Florida Folklore Society, Kennedy is a recipient of the Florida Folk Heritage Award and the Florida Governor's Heartland Award. His contributions to the preservation and propagation of folk culture is the subject of a dissertation, "Stetson Kennedy: Applied Folklore and Cultural Advocacy" (University of Pennsylvania, 1992), by Peggy A. Bulger, who assumed the directorship of the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress in 1999.  Here are some links to Mr. Kennedy

From Chuck Spano:
this weekend - loose/fun, jam, whatever - have pond in the
back if you want to bring a canoe, etc. - it's an equestrian
community (but we don't ride horses so don't know about all that) so
folks ride their ponies on the power line, etc. - plenty of room to
park for horse trailers, etc. if you want to do that

We're in Eagle Rock Estates which is two miles north of the I-95/US-1
interchange (Exit 273) in north Ormond - on the east side of US-1,
just north of Plantation Bay - come in, go past the guardhouse, and
bear right on Winchester almost to the end, #42 on the right hand
side - plenty of parking along the street or in the back yard, etc.
(watch the speed bumps - they are SERIOUS sized)

If you put 42 Winchester Road, Ormond Beach into your trip computer
or GPS it may or may not find us - in Pat's new Honda with the gps
unit we had to put in BUNNELL as the city and then all worked fine -
we have an Ormond Beach address and zip code but a Bunnell/Flagler
county phone number - go figure.

Our phone's if you need to call, etc. are: Cell: (386)-852-5436
(mine) or 5437 (Pat's)
Home
is: 386-437-0185

Celtica - www.lyraceltica.com - this is the hottest traditional

planning to come down and spend a few days with us in mid-July and
we're going to help set up some gigs for them. World champ bhodran
