2008 - all below are in Ormond Beach unless noted otherwise

March 7 (Friday), 2008 - - Kate Long & Robin Kessinger in Gainesville
Malore Gardens - 1701 SW 58th Ave - Gainesville
$10
info: Leslie (352) 371-9801

A collaboration between two of Appalachia's most compelling performers. "Working together, they create magic." Appalachian traditional and contemporary music, laughter, thought-provoking stories, and who knows what."

Kate and Robin each have their own followings, so they draw from a double audience. They love to play together. "We stretch each other creatively, and we have a lot of fun doing it," Kate said.

Robin Kessinger: a strikingly creative, expressive player, has held the national flatpick guitar champion title (Winfield) and the title of five states. A beloved, nationally-known guitar teacher, he has his own Mel Bay tab book. His family, the legendary Kessinger family of old-time music, was featured in a BBC documentary. Robin is a popular teacher at the Augusta Heritage Center, the Swannanoa Gathering, and Steve Kaufmann's Guitar Kamp, among others. He has performed on more than two dozen CDs. Rooted in Appalachian traditional music, he is at home in many styles.

Kate Long: is a national award-winning songwriter, storyteller, and journalist. Rambles Magazine described her voice as "a deep, rich force." Her songs have won a variety of national honors, including the International Bluegrass Music Song of the Year for "Who Will Watch the Homeplace?" She has performed at the International Storytelling Center, the Kennedy Center Millenium Stage, and various festivals and camps. Songwriting students give her classes top marks at camps such as the Augusta Heritage Center and the Swannanoa Gathering. She is also a journalists who tackles tough subjects. Like her public radio and newspaper stories, her songs showcase her heart, humor, and down-to-earth ability to connect with an audience.

March 16 (Sunday), 2008 - - Jonathan Byrd (www.jonathanbyrd.com) - 7:00 pm House Concert, Ormond Beach
Folk legend Tom Paxton discovered Jonathan Byrd's music and sent him a quick email, saying, "What a treat to hear someone so deeply rooted in tradition, yet growing in his own beautiful way." He had just released "Wildflowers," in late 2001, simple tales of love and death that seemed to be a hundred years old or more. In 2003 Byrd released his second album, "The Waitress" and won the prestigious New Folk competition in Kerrville, TX. That year, he set CD sales records at the festival.  As Jonathan grows into a contemporary artist of increasing influence, his traditional roots are always evident in his simple, poetic storytelling and classic flatpick guitar style. But, as quoted in a recent interview for Dirty Linen magazine, Jonathan says, "Everything I do is a departure from what I've done." "The Sea and the Sky" is certainly evidence of that. Keep an ear out for an upcoming electric album, sure to take us further out on a limb without forgetting our roots.  "I thought I was listening to a young Doc Watson." - Jay Moulon, Southeast Performer Magazine -
