  1. Tampa Jazz Club Presenting TWO Great Jazz Concerts Back-to-Back Jan 28 & 29, 2018!

JAZZ GUITAR GREATS TO PERFORM IN TAMPA:
    Dave Strykerand
    Peter Bernstein

The Tampa Jazz Club is proud to announce concerts by two of the leading guitarists in the jazz world, on consecutive days in late January. The Tampa Jazz Guitar Summit will first feature the DAVE STRYKER QUINTET, in the Mainstage Theatre at HCC/Ybor City, on Sunday, January 28, at 3:00, part of the HCC Visual & Performing Arts Series. And the following evening at the USF Concert Hall, PETER BERNSTEIN will perform with the USF FACULTY JAZZ ENSEMBLE at 7:30 p.m., part of the Monday Night Jazz Series presented in conjunction with the USF School of Music.

DAVE STRYKER returns to Tampa following his remarkable concert at HCC/Ybor in March, 2015, and appearances later that year at the Clearwater Jazz Holiday. His latest recording, ‘Strykin’ Ahead,’ is his 28th as a leader, and reached the #3 spot in the Jazz Week national radio chart. Stryker played for more than a decade with saxophonist Stanley Turrentine, and has worked extensively with Jack McDuff, the late Kevin Mahogany, and with Steve Slagle in the Stryker/Slagle Band. For the HCC concert, he’ll be joined by Jack Wilkins, saxophone; Chris Rottmayer, piano; Charlie Silva, bass; and Walt Hubbard, drums.

PETER BERNSTEIN has been one of the most sought-after musicians in jazz for more than 25 years. After playing through the 90’s with saxophone legend Lou Donaldson, he has worked with bands led by Sonny Rollins, Joshua Redman, Diana Krall, and Dr. Lonnie Smith, among many others, appearing on more than 80 recordings along the way. At January’s Monday Night Jazz, Bernstein will perform with the USF Jazz Faculty, featuring fellow guitarist LaRUE NICKELSON; CHRIS ROTTMAYER, keyboards; MARK NEUENSCHWANDER, bass; and RIC CRAIG, drums.

Two days, two beautiful Tampa concert halls – and two of the world’s most exciting jazz guitarists (who happen to be longtime friends). Why choose just one? Hope to see you for both Sunday Afternoon, and Monday Night Jazz, at the January Tampa Jazz Guitar Summit!

  4. Bluesman Rev Shawn Amos Florida Club Debut Concert January 28, 2018 in Gainesville Florida

    West Coast Blues Coming
    to Gainesville Florida

    The Reverend Shawn Amos!

The North Central Florida Blues Society presents another
FIRST in FLORIDA! This upcoming performance will be the
debut CLUB show in Florida for this amazing bluesman!

    Opening Show:

    Sunday, January 28, 2018 ~ Doors 6pm / Show 6:30pm
    210 SW 2nd Avenue
    Gainesville FL 32601
    MAP

The Reverend Shawn Amos is a Los Angeles-based, chart-topping bluesman ready to turn any venue into a 1960’s Chicago blues club. His foot stomping, harp-wailing performances. like tent revivals of yore, energize the faithful, and convert the wayward to the Rev’s message of booty-shakin’, deeply joyful blues.

The Rev came up in 1970s Los Angeles, at the feet of musical legends like Marvin Gaye and Quincy Jones, as well as all manner of Hollywood street folk. The son of music agent-turned entrepreneur, Wally “Famous” Amos, and R&B nightclub singer, Shirlee May, Shawn found music early, and has worked within it his entire adult life. His rich career as a producer includes overseeing new music and retrospectives from R&B blues legends Solomon Burke, John Lee Hooker, and Johnny “Guitar” Watson, and scores of other legacy acts. This Reverend doesn’t preach chastity but genuine love and lust that makes the world whole.

“Being a blues singer means having a journey of pain and loss,” says Shawn Amos. “But the music itself is all about joy, about finding your way out of the darkness.”

No Depression magazine said “This band is gritty at times and also takes us back to stompin’ grooves that are reminiscent of that R&B that was made famous by the legendary Muscle Shoals bands. Yet at other times the pulsing boogie they produce won’t let a fanny remain quiet and still in its chair.”

Also enriching this fine evening will be the High Dive debut of The Shakedown featuring Michelle Banfield. Some of you caught Michelle sing with Chicago Blues performer Zora Young, and some may know her from her years with Fast Lane. Be aware that her new band The Shakedown is blessed with some fantastic instrumental talent as well: Frank Bougher is on lead guitar, Keith Ladd on bass, Sean Crowley on drums, and Randy Hensley is on keys and guitar.

General admission is $15, with NCFBS members getting in for $8. Doors open at 6 pm, with the music starting at 6:30.

The North Central Florida Blues Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation, cultivation, nurturing and promotion of Blues Music. The Society also hosts monthly electric and acoustic jams. See website for more information.

  5. Soul and R&B Greats Bell, Rush and Bryant Bringing Memphis to Fort Lauderdale Feb 3, 2018

    TAKE ME TO THE RIVER:
    MEMPHIS SOUL AND R&B REVUE
    FEATURING WILLIAM BELL,
    BOBBY RUSH & DON BRYANT

    Saturday, February 3, 2018
    Parker Playhouse
     707 NE 8th Street
    Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304

This live performance experience is based on the award-winning film and record that brought together multiple generations of iconic Memphis and Mississippi Delta musicians. It features Grammy Award-winners and legends William Bell and Bobby Rush, and Memphis music legend Don Bryant sharing the stage and performing classics and new TMTTR collaborations.

Memphis musicians William Bell, Bobby Rush, and Don Bryant are three of this country’s great elder statesmen of soul music. Recording for labels in Memphis and elsewhere in the South, they produced a bevy of acclaimed albums and helped turn out hits for the likes of Otis Redding, Tina Turner, and Al Green. With a sultrier, grittier sensibility than their Motown neighbors up north, the Memphis sound these artists created was recently featured in Take Me to the River, a musical documentary that took home the Audience Award at SXSW Film Festival and helped put this revue on the road.

Backed by an all-star Memphis band, including Hi Rhythm Section, Grammy Award-winner Boo Mitchell, Grammy Award-nominee Martin Shore, alumni from the STAX Music Academy, and special appearances from award-winning rappers Frayser Boy and Al Kapone.
