Come experience the joy of West African dance! This energizing and inviting class will focus on traditional and contemporary dances from and inspired by different cultures in West Africa. We will dance to both live percussion and recorded music as we learn the fundamentals of West African dance technique, the cultural significance of particular dances, and have fun moving together. Dr. Queen Meccasia Zabriskie is originally from the Bronx, NY, and she has been studying West African dance since she was a little girl. She has studied with African American and West African dance teachers in the U.S. including, but not limited to, Wilhelmena Taylor, Moustapha Bangora, Ava Vinesett, Idy Ciss, and Tosha Alston. She has also traveled to Guinea and Senegal to study dance, and she studied contemporary dance in intensives and institutes offered by Ronald K. Brown and Urban Bush Women. Dr. Zabriskie is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at New College of Florida.
