Feb-Apr 2012 Belmont & Jones Feb 23 thru Apr 8 Belmont & Jones is a traditional blues duo that works mainly out of Tallahassee and New Orleans. To get an idea of our sound, visit our facebook here: facebook.com/belmontandjones - and/or search "Belmont & Jones" on youtube. I know you'll like what you hear! In a nutshell: Belmont & Jones performs early (1920s & 30s) blues from "the well" of deep country blues as realized by Ma Rainey, Memphis Minnie, Charley Patton, Son House and Skip James to name a few. We keep it simple: two guitars and usually one voice at a time. Most people, I have found, don't know what they're hearing when they hear us for the first time because this music has been so overshadowed by the later electrified, urbanized version of "The Blues" that these early songs have slipped into oblivion. We add to the existing body of music as well, performing originals that are inspired by the depths of the well. Here are the dates we have available over the next few months before we head north on tour: Feb. 23-24, 27-28 March 4-8, 30-31 April 2-3, 5-8 Contact: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it March 2012 Jim is booked March 17 in Dover, FL. We are looking for a venue for that Friday and/or Sun. in FL. You may visit Jim's website at www.jimhurst.com. Here's a link to his online EPK (Electronic Press Kit) press kit: http://www.sonicbids.com/epk/epk.aspx?epk_id=44521. "Jim Hurst is one of the most versatile and tasteful guitar players I know. Whether he's flailing the rhythm for an old time fiddle tune, laying down a funky groove, or finger picking a beautiful ballad, his playing is both impeccable and creative. Accompanying this instrumental virtuosity is a rich and expressive voice with a surprising range." Mark Schatz To listen to Jim Hurst is to be amazed by his tasteful and flawless performances. Perfect timing and tone and his unusual picking style has enchanted guitar players from the novice to his peers. It’s no surprise, then, that his musical mastery began with a musical upbringing paving the way for a winding and varied career path. Born into a musical family, Jim spent his youth playing guitar under the influences of flat-picking greats Tony Rice, Doc Watson, George Shuffler, and Clarence White. But the finger-style playing of Merle Travis, Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed was the “turn in the road” for Jim. This amalgam of impact defined his technique. Using his early years to hone his style, Jim’s guitar work and harmony vocals for Holly Dunn’s Rio Band brought his talent to both the national and international stage. Then in 1992, going electric, he played guitar with Trisha Yearwood, touring extensively and appearing on numerous radio and television shows. He also performed with Travis Tritt, the McCarter Sisters and Sara Evans, whose 1998 RCA release No Place That Far features Jim’s vocals and acoustic guitar work. Craving to play more bluegrass, Jim joined Grammy-nominated Claire Lynch and The Front Porch String Band in 1995, during which time he teamed up with bassist Missy Raines. They began the duet Jim Hurst and Missy Raines while with Front Porch, but then broke off in 2000 to focus solely on their collaboration. Remaining faithful to their bluegrass roots, Jim and Missy explored other genres creating ground-breaking arrangements that wowed the bluegrass community. Their partnership resulted in two Pinecastle Records, Two and Synergy , receiving critical acclaim and garnering them IBMA Guitar and Bass Player of the Year for 2001 and 2002. Desiring greater freedom to create his own musical path, Jim left the Claire Lynch Band in 2010 to embark on a solo career. Already seasoned with two solo recordings, Open Window and Second Son, his latest 2007 release, A Box of Chocolates, exhibits his deft guitar work and soothing vocals. His shows meet with rave reviews as he astounds his audiences with his brilliant playing yet makes people feel right at home with his humble congenial and funny persona. Jim is currently performing solo full time, both nationally and internationally, as well as teaching at camps and workshops in North America and Europe. Additionally, his highly sought-after talent has led to side projects with other bluegrass greats, most recently Rob Ickes and David Grisman. But his solo show, which allows his personal style and unique creativity to come through in spades, is what keeps his audiences mesmerized. Naming the Twins
This is Kath & Robbie writing to you from the beautiful wee historic village of Shelburne Nova Scotia. We're a happenin', harmonizin' acoustic duo called Naming the Twins and we'll be touring in your area a few months from now. Last year we sang our way from NS to Georgia, but this year, we're venturing a little further. We'll be in Florida aproximately March 17 - April 1 and were hoping to line up some house concerts and performances in listening room. We will be based on the Palm Coast but are not adverse to traveling to other parts.
Our dynamic but humble duo has had a joyously busy year; releasing our first CD, touring the eastern US, and playing a variety of venues around eastern Canada.
All 13 tracks from our album, "Sweet Transitions" have received airplay on programs such as The Midnight Specialsyndicated throughout the US, the Spider Robinson Podcast, and we've appeared in person on shows like Woody's Children NY, Blue Plate Special Knoxville TN, Atlantic Airwaves on CBC etc. Here's a few recent videos - just simple point-and-shoot camera set-ups - but they will give you an inkling of what we do: Somedays Naming the Twins is a lively acoustic folk duo performing originals and familiar favourites all served up with heaps of fresh guy/gal harmony. The Twins never fail to entertain their audiences well, balancing thoughtful ballads with toe-tappin’ numbers, transporting the listener with lyrical imagery and sweet harmonies.
Robbie comes from a "tradition bearer" family – shipbuilders and folksingers—and is the songwriter of the group with a lifetime of widely varied styles in his repertoire, some being recorded by Roger Whittaker. Kath shares his inspiration and brings an engaging voice as well as a knack for vocal harmonies. “…a fabulous feast of musical harmony" Kath and Robbie have a repertoire of music that includes old favorites and a blend of original tunes that woo memories of the 60’s and 70’s. As one audience member noted "Rob’s superb guitar skills stopped us dead in our tracks." This duo understands entertainment and how to embrace their audience.
A review:“Hosting Kath and Rob on the recommendation of an acquaintance, their performance was a gem of unexpected brilliance! Impossible to pigeonhole in one genre, they ranged easily through a repertoire of traditional, folk, rock, pop, and original works that had the room grinning, rocking, toe-tapping, and singing along. Swapping leads, blending harmonies, and Rob’s unique two-finger guitar style—all melding into a polished and dynamic music high. Thoroughly engaging and uniquely Canadian (in the best way), their stage banter with the audience and between themselves was witty, spontaneous, and a complete hoot! In the highly competitive world of folk duos, Naming the Twins will always be welcome as an entertainment standout.” Gregg—Acoustics at Oaks End To listen to some sample tunes from our CD and for lots more info please visit: www.namingthetwins.com Contact info:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ JimmyCrowley has been a central figure in the Irish folkscene since the enthusiastic reception of his debut album The Boys of Fairhill in 1977. With his band Stokers Lodge their mission was to present the street ballads of Cork city complimented by the ornate folk songs of the rural hinterland of Cork and Kerry in an exciting orchestration of uileann pipes, concertina, autoharp, harmonium, mandolin, bouzouki and guitar in their native accent.The second album, Camphouse Ballads hurtled the band into the vortex of the folk scene; they were now performing at folk festivals and making tv appearances in Ireland, Britain and America .Both albums were produced by Micheál Ó Dómhnaill of the Bothy Band. Like Chris Twomey of Stokers Lodge, Micheál was a seminal influence in Jimmy’s musical education. Every Jimmy Crowley album after the demise of Stokers Lodge in the middle eighties has been imbued with an excitment and autonomy; has challenged conventions and has been totally different from it’s predessesor. Somethings Never Change, an eclectic, electric experiment featuring some of the most creative musicians in Ireland: Declan Sinnott, Keith Mc Donald and Christy Moore of Moving Hearts was applauded and voted album of the year by rock critic, Bill Graham.Jimmy’s new band, The Electic Band released a reggae version of the Cork ballad, The Boys of Fairhill which went into the pop charts. In between recording and writing his own songs, Crowley found time to taste the rich Gaelic hinterland of his native provence of Munster learning his profession as a bard and falling in love with the Irish language.The songs he learned in the Irish speaking parts of Munster found a hearth in his first Irish language album, Jimí Mo Mhíle Stór, produced by Dónal Lunny for Gael Linn records. There followed a bitter-sweet amalgam of caustic urban ballads and sentimental parlour songs which Crowley had began to endorse. The album simply called,Jimmy Crowley for K-tel records was produced by Declan Sinnott.Crowley’s fascination with the theatre and in particular musical drama culminated in the ballad opera, Red Patriots.Set against the backdrop of Mao Tse Tung’s cultural and social policies,it’s the story of an apprentice musician who falls for a revolutionary girl.Actual events such as the mob-incited burning of the Marxist bookshop in Cork city in the early seventies induce fierce realism. The play was well received and ran successfully at the Triskil Arts Centre in Cork City. By now Jimmy Crowley had established himself not just as a traditon bearer, ethnographer and Gaelic language enthusiast but also as a stylish songwriter. His song about the sailing ship Asgard, My Love is a Tall Ship, was adopted as an athem for sailors everywhere and was used in the documentary film on the Tall Ships’ Race made by the National Television Station in Ireland. The eponomous album that followed presented all original songs couched in small string orchestra ,subtle rhythm section and songwriter Dave Murphy’s piano skills.Her Excelency, Mary Robinson was the subject of the quazi-bassanova style skit, Mrs President which finally proclaimed to those who pidgeon-holed Crowley as being the “voice of Cork” and nothing else,that there was much more to this man. Depressed at the demise of the Irish language and Celtic traditions and the endorsement by the Irish government of cultural globalisation, Crowley began work on his Celtic Utopian novel, Hy Brazil. Its the story of a new resurrgence and autonomy set slightly in the future; exorting Plato’s Rule of the Wise and it’s a poetical,didactic dismissal of everything the Celtic Tiger stands for. There followed his first live solo album, Uncorked and the establishment of his own record company, Freestate Records. The Coast of Malibar endorsed both his love for the sea and sailing and his affection for the double-string instruments like bouzouki, mando-cello, dordán, mandola and mandolin. Jimmy is joined here by an old friend, Tríona Ní Dhómhnaill of the Bothy Band .His new album, Irish Eyes, is a swing-jazz reverential treatment of old John Mc Cormack,Bing Crosby and Flanaghan Brothers Irish-American sentimental songs which Crowley feels are part ot the legitimate legacy of Irish song. Here he breathes fresh life into old chesnuts like Danny Boy and When Irish Eyes are Smiling and displays creditable crooning skills. Almost all of Crowley’s older vinyl albums have now been digitally remastered and Freestate present an excellent catalogue of his albums.Jimmy now lives in Dunedin,near Clearwater, Florida. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Pleasant Family Old Time String Band consists of five members who play the "old time" music Hi Folks, ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mountain Brew--Andy Burr on guitar, harmonica, and vocals; Sara Burr on mandolin (or as a trio with fiddle or a full band with bass and drums). For the past thirty years, Geoff Kaufman has been leading audiences to find truth, humor and beauty in folk music. Songs of the sea, songs of the earth, songs of the heart and the spirit - all of these are in Geoff Kaufman’s ditty bag. Ancient ballads, work songs and songs of love; poignant songs of people in struggle, humorous glimpses of human foibles and insights into history. All of these are likely to be woven into one of Geoff’s concerts. Above all, at the core of Geoff’s performance is his rich tenor voice, and an exuberant love of singing.
